Some people can't even get their lives together at 50 but this man managed to build a whole nation in 50 years.. And I think that's really really pretty amazing.
I may not have cried as hard as everyone else or manage to queue up for 8 hours or know anything about politics and anything remotely adult-ish, but I do know that this man made Singapore what it is today.
Being a Singaporean all my life means that I tend to take things for granted. I don't stop to think about our education system (that many countries look up to) or our uncorrupted government. I don't think about our public transport and how efficient and convenient and easy it is. I don't think about how Singapore is home to 4 different races and how we still manage to get along with each other. I don't think about how safe Singapore is, like how I don't have to keep clutching on to my bag or how I don't have to be extremely cautious when I'm walking home at 2am.
And most importantly, I don't think about how LKY took only 50 years to transform our once-unknown and TINY red dot into a country where places like the U.S. recognize and even admire.
This whole week made me realize how extremely privileged I am to not have experienced war or unfair treatment or a corrupted government and also just how proud I am to call myself a Singaporean..... So thank you, Mr Lee, for everything.
